Ready, Set, Find x!

The highlight of SIMC2.0 has arrived! Teams launched into tackling the challenge with its release at nine in the morning. Anticipating a shift in scope since yesterday’s masterclass, students from the hosting NUS High School explained to Epigraph journalists their predictions of the challenge increasing its focus on computational algorithms. This morning’s reveal, however, seemed to point towards a return to the mathematical rigour of the earlier editions — it will be firmly rooted in the study of linear algebra.
In twenty-one subproblems, contestants will journey from the more theoretical pursuit of rotating matrices to applications in the food chemistry of caffeinated beverages. The central theme bringing everything together is what the problem-setters describe as “one of linear algebra’s most useful ideas” — the idea that only a few out of a dataset’s many dimensions is needed to make sense of it. Contestants will be assessed on their ability to discern the relevant dimensions and, in the problem setters’ words, “reveal the hidden structure of the samples”.
The NUS High contestant who previously projected a shift away from mathematics stated his pleasant surprise at this year’s problem. On the other hand, competitors from North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics counted themselves lucky for a variety of reasons. Their research on current advancements and journals inspired by the masterclass prevented the challenge topic from taking them by shock, which they reiterated with their confident words of “We felt pretty prepared today!”. They were further bolstered by the mathematics modelling class they took at school, as well as the MathWorks Math Modelling Challenge they had tackled together beforehand as practice.
Other schools took different approaches to their preparations. Students from Thailand’s Mahidol Wittayanusorn School sparred with each other on Maths Olympiad problems last evening. Meanwhile, Germany’s Aloisiuskolleg chose to catch up on some sleep last night, setting their bedtime at nine, to get themselves into the right frame of mind for today’s intellectual exercise.
